Mundulla
You will find Mundulla 274kms from Adelaide, A pleasant rural town just off the Dukes Highway near Bordertown, South Australia.
Enjoy the unique country atmosphere and its surrounding swamplands, vineyards and rural landscapes, featuring the beautiful red gums typical of the area.
Many of Mundulla’s houses are old and original, dating from early 1900’s and represents a history of rural dwelling architecture over the twentieth century.
Of particular interest are the iron clad cottages of various periods, most still well maintained and added onto over the years to adapt for growing families and changing lifestyles.
Moot Yang Gunya Swamp and Runaway Hole is a popular attraction.
Access to the runaway hole is at the gate (sign posted) at Jimmy’s Waterhole.
This section (800m) is the walking trail on private property so we ask that you respect the landowner’s generosity.
The deepest section of the swamp has provided permanent water supply and was discovered by the aboriginals and then shown to the white people as a good and constant source of water.
In the wet seasons, this swamp attracts a huge variety of water birds that breed here. When the summer season arrives, the runaway holes open up and drains the entire swamp except Jimmy’s Waterhole.
This draining, replenishes the aquifer.
Natural regrowth of red gums occurs next to magnificent old tree’s estimated to be at least 250 years old. This unique area is important both historically and environmentally.
The old Mundulla Hotel was first opened in 1884, closed in 1912 and was used as a boarding house and then as a store, offering meals during the 1920’s.
It was then used as a residence, a girl guides club rooms and after standing vacant for some years, was rescued from demolition in 1972.
It was then restored as a National Trust Headquarters and Museum and is now under new ownership and operated as a licensed restaurant.
