-FACT: By 1863, Penola housed the largest library outside
Adelaide, which attracted folk such as the poet, Adam
Lindsay Gordon who came to the district often. Three years
later (1866) Mary McKillop, Australia's first saint, built
the first of many schools. She founded the Sisters of St
Joseph of the Sacred Heart and Father Julian Tenison Woods,
a Catholic priest, who in 1866 actively assisted Mary
McKillop in doing so. Around 1890 John Riddoch formed the
Coonawarra Fruit Colony that was soon to become the famous
wine region 'Coonawarra' as it is known today.
